A federal court in Oregon has awarded $3.3 million to Columbia Sportswear Co. in a default judgment against a Hong Kong supplier the company alleged had sold it defective components for electrically heated jackets. Judge Michael Simon found Fibretronic Ltd. of Hong Kong liable for damages. Columbia originally had sought $9.4 million in damages when it filed the action in September 2013. The Hong Kong-based firm filed no court papers related to the action, which centered on wires placed within the sleeves of jackets. However, Columbia said, a misalignment of the wires created a risk to consumers. Columbia had issued product recalls for the faulty jackets and abandoned its plans for the electrically heated products. It secured an order that allowed it to destroy all but a small number of jackets that could be required in court proceedings. The Portland-based company had previously used similar technology in boots and gloves, according to court papers, and had introduced it in apparel in 2011.
