LONDON – Domenico De Sole has been named chairman of the board of Sotheby’s, and will be working with its new chief executive officer Tad Smith. Both appointments were announced Monday, and Sotheby’s also said that, for the first time, it has separated the roles of chairman and ceo. Smith will take over the publicly listed company as president and ceo on March 31. He succeeds William F. Ruprecht, who has been ceo since 2000. Smith, 49, held similar roles at the Madison Square Garden Co. (MSG) since February 2014. He oversaw the overall strategy and day-to-day operations of MSG’s sports, media and entertainment divisions. “Tad Smith’s appointment is the result of a thorough search process to identify an extraordinary leader to build on Sotheby’s strengths,” said De Sole. De Sole is the chairman of Tom Ford International and the former president and ceo of Gucci Group, now part of Kering. He was named lead independent director of Sotheby’s in 2013. He is on the board of directors of companies including Gap Inc. and Telecom Italia. He succeeds Ruprecht as Sotheby’s chairman of the board.
