L.A. Mills Focus on Added Value

LOS ANGELES — Designers and manufacturers at the Los Angeles International Textile show put a premium on organic textiles, digital prints and custom trims that will differentiate their collections. Vendors from the U.S., Europe and Asia highlighted their spring 2016 materials, while keeping in mind the peculiarities of the U.S. market at the three-day show that ended March 4 at the California Market Center. Many local designers gravitated to companies that allowed for small minimums and quick turnarounds on orders, some as short as three weeks for making custom fabric. For Sammie Lee, designer of the Los Angeles-based children’s line Cinderella Couture, safety took precedence over budgets. “We have to find something that is safe for kids and comfortable to wear,” she said, noting that her retail prices range from $49.99 to $120. Besides, the increasingly discerning tastes of her young customers help open the door to better, pricier fabrics. “They’re very picky,” she said. “When I like something, I just try it.” Thai Nguyen adhered to a strict budget for his namesake line of special occasion dresses, even if his retail prices start at $1,500.
