LA Times Names S. Mitra Kalita to Key Role

The Los Angeles Times is shaking up its newsroom structure and adding new faces. The newspaper hired away S. Mitra Kalita from Atlantic Media’s business site Quartz where she served as its executive editor. She joins the LA Times as managing editor for editorial strategy. In a memo to staff Wednesday, the paper’s publisher Austin Beautner and editor Davan Maharaj wrote: “The news environment and the needs of readers are changing more rapidly than at any time in the history of our industry. The Los Angeles Times should do more than keep pace with that change; we must strive to lead it. To that end, we are expanding the newsroom leadership and announcing an important new hire. These moves continue our efforts to create a newsroom of the future that can innovate even as we deliver robust digital and print coverage for our readers.” In her new role, Kalita will help the daily “remake how the newsroom works” and focus on “creating new forms of journalism,” the memo said. Like The New York Times, which has four deputy executive editors reporting to executive editor Dean Baquet, the LA Times will have multiple high-level editors reporting up to Maharaj.
