LOS ANGELES — Raj Manufacturing is making a bigger splash in the swim market with its acquisition of Basta Surf. The Tustin, Calif.-based swimwear manufacturer has added the seven-year-old New York brand known for sexy beachwear to its portfolio that already consists of proprietary labels Athena, Next by Athena and Luxe by Lisa Vogel. Raj also produces swimsuits under license for contemporary, footwear and action sports brands, including Ella Moss, Splendid, Hurley, Nautica and Reef. With Basta Surf, which was founded by Samantha August and Emily Ford, Raj aims to expand its presence in better fashion retailers such as Ron Herman, Barneys New York, Elyse Walker, Intermix, Moda Operandi and Saks Fifth Avenue. Basta Surf’s retail prices start at $94 for bikini tops and run up to $415 for a printed wetsuit. August and Ford plan to continue as the brand’s creative directors out of New York. Started 47 years ago, Raj runs its own factories employing 400 workers. Terms for the purchase weren’t disclosed.
