StyleWatch has named Lisa Arbetter as editor in chief, after the magazine’s parent company Time Inc. dismissed longtime founding editor Susan Kaufman at the end of January. StyleWatch staff learned of the appointment Tuesday at 9:45 am in a staff meeting led by Ariel Foxman, who holds the dual role of InStyle editor in chief and StyleWatch editorial director. Arbetter, who most recently served as a deputy editor at InStyle for six years, will report to Ariel Foxman. The appointment marks a return to StyleWatch for Arbetter, who also served at the magazine as deputy editor when it launched in 2007. Arbetter’s role at InStyle will be replaced, a spokeswoman said. “Lisa is a brilliant editor, a business-minded strategist and open-minded collaborator,” said Foxman. “That–coupled with her sophisticated understanding of the needs and wants of the fashion and beauty–obsessed consumer–makes her the perfect partner to lead StyleWatch into its next exciting and innovative phase.” Time Inc.’s editorial structure—that being one with an editorial director overseeing a smaller magazine—is somewhat new for the company.
