San Francisco Equity Partners Acquires Japonesque

JAPONESQUE DEAL: San Francisco Equity Partners is building its beauty portfolio with the acquisition of Japonesque. Terms of the deal, which takes effect today, were not disclosed. But industry sources estimate that Japonesque generates retail sales south of $25 million. Japonesque was founded in 1984 and is a company with a deep heritage of creating beauty products inspired by the professional makeup tools used in Kabuki theater in Japan. The product line includes makeup brushes, eyelash curlers, tweezers, makeup cases and other beauty accessories. The company recently launched color cosmetics, which can be found at retailers in the prestige beauty, drug and mass channels. With the purchase, SFEP, which already holds in its consumer stable brands such as Yes To, Method Home and ICU Eyewear, is looking to rev up and fully capitalize on Japonesque’s distribution channels. “We see significant opportunity for growth on both the Japonesque-branded tools and recently launched color cosmetics line in the beauty channel, particularly at Ulta, which is a big opportunity,” said Scott Potter, managing partner at SFEP. “We also see significant growth opportunities in taking the company’s “category management” approach to managing the beauty tools and accessories program for large drugstore and mass retailers to additional customers,

Rebecca Taylor Does Swimwear With Giejo

Rebecca Taylor never designed swimwear, but always felt there was something lacking in the market. Until she saw Giejo’s mix-and-match bikini tops and bottoms. Taylor got together with Giejo’s creator, Gabby Sabharwal and the two have collaborated on a swimwear capsule, Rebecca Taylor X Giejo Swim, available in May in Taylor’s stores and rebeccataylor.com. Giejo is known for its figure-flattering silhouettes and fashion-forward prints. Taylor, who has a modern, feminine aesthetic, created ivory and blush paisley patterns, bold leopard prints and fuchsia florals inspired by dresses her mother wore in the Seventies for four of Sabharwal’s bikini styles. Each print is available in two colorways. The collection will retail for $100 to $125 per piece. “I love the idea behind interchangeable and multifunctional swim pieces that you can customize to your body type,” Taylor said. “When designing, my customer is always top of mind and I wanted to offer a capsule collection that she can have fun with while still feeling confident. When I go to the swimwear departments in department stores, there’s definitely room for a more contemporary voice in swimwear.” Sabharwal first met Taylor several years ago when she was working for the public relations company that produces Taylor’s runway shows. “Rebecca

Chicago’s Hot Neighborhood: Logan Square

CHICAGO — Susan Flaga witnessed her neighborhood’s evolution by looking out the window of her hair salon. Sparrow, a sophisticated yet unassuming salon at 2545 North Milwaukee Avenue, whose clients include everyone from blogger Tavi Gevinson to musicians Tom Krell of How To Dress Well and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy to the Creatures of the Wind designers, is steps away from the now-shuttered Milshire Hotel, at 2525 North Milwaukee Avenue. “The foot traffic changed. When we started construction on Sparrow, it was people who lived at the Milshire, which was a vagrant hotel. And now, the crowd is just younger and stylish,” said Flaga, who opened the salon in 2009 with her partner Bathsheba Nemerovski. At that time, Logan Square wasn’t the in-demand locale it is today — Redfin named it the eighth hottest neighborhood in the country in 2013 and the national real estate broker said its appeal shows no signs of slowing. “Sheba and I both lived here and we both didn’t want to commute anymore. I had an intuition that it was going to be a good idea,” Flaga said. Logan Square’s tree-lined boulevards, turn-of-the-century mansions, acclaimed eateries like the gastro pub Longman & Eagle, craft cocktail lounge Billy Sunday and Lula Café

Eichner’s Eye: My 50th Birthday Bash

WWD photographer Steve Eichner lives to tell the tales from his 50th birthday party and after party. 42 West Club, New York 6:36 p.m.: Latex pants, harness and bullwhip. I’m channeling my inner Peter Marino as I get dressed for my 50th birthday party. The theme? “50 Shades of Steve.” 6:47 p.m.: Whips and chains over there by the photo booth? Check. Guest list? Check. Agency photographers are in place on the red carpet, let’s get some music going, 13 minutes until doors open. I scream, running around frantically making sure everything is set: “Where are the go-go dancers?” 6:49 p.m.: I run down to the dressing room and give the dancers their instructions for the evening. Notice a cool shot of my reflection in the mirror with the dancers preparing. Click, click. 7:00 p.m.: “The doors are open. Let the games begin!” 7:07 p.m.: “Sorry I’m a bit late.” My DJ NappyG arrives. I run him up to the booth. 7:37 p.m.: I do an impromptu photo shoot of my girlfriend Josie on a black shiny wall. A crowd gathers around to watch. Red latex minidress, red wig, red thigh-high boots, all tied together with red rope. “50 shades of red,” I giggle as I snap

London Fashion Week to Celebrate ‘Minnie Style’

MINNIE MOUSE IN LONDON: Alongside the action at London Fashion Week’s spring shows in September, the British Fashion Council is set to support a celebration of a certain famous cartoon mouse’s style off the runway. “Minnie Style,” a photographic exhibition to be held at London Fashion Week, will chart how the character has served as a style influencer over the years. Justine Finch, director of franchise for Walt Disney Company U.K., pointed to moments such as Madonna shot by Herb Ritts wearing a pair of Minnie Mouse ears, or the character appearing on the cover of Love Magazine’s fall 2013 issue, while models such as Cara Delevingne and Georgia May Jagger wore Minnie Mouse ears created by designers on alternative covers of the same edition. And Jagger will also have a hand in the Minnie Style exhibition, which runs Sept. 18 through 22, with the model curating the exhibition and including some of her own photographic shots in the show. Ahead of the exhibit’s opening, Jagger will invite her Instagram followers to share ideas for the show, using the hashtag minniestyleuk. Jagger noted that the exhibition will “[show] how pop culture can influence fashion in a way that encourages excitement
